SPDC Fall meeting goes ahead

The IEEE PES Surge Protective Devices Committee (SPDC), 02 – 07 October 2017, Fall Meeting in Clearwater Beach, Florida is still on after Hurricane Irma. The Sheraton Sand Key Resort was shut with the approach of Irma, but is now opening for business again. The hurricane brought down several trees but power was never lost.

Reminder: The current SPDC meeting registration fee is 75 $, but come 15 September 2017 the registration fee increases to 95 $.

One thing that isn't go, but gone is the Camp Blanding lightning research facility. Many of you will have been to lectures and read papers resulting from the work done at Camp Blanding.  Professor Martin Uman, who has run at Camp Blanding since 1994, was shocked to receive a letter from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) saying that they would no longer provide funding for the lightning research facility. The DARPA funding was part of the Nimbus project, which now only exists as an archived project on the DARPA website https://www.darpa.mil/program/nimbus

It's the end of an era. On the plus side the Camp Blanding work has produced a multitude of papers and books for our enlightenment on lightning.
